PToB Viability: Rooted BLE Timing Meshes for Heterogeneous Edge Networks

Preprint

Can a rooted BLE timing mesh serve different kinds of edge devices?

Overview

This is the starting point for PToB research. It connects the protocol’s receive-only timing, grandmaster and hot-standby roles, heterogeneous relays and macOS client into one system assessment. It also considers scaling, power tradeoffs and a future bridge to wired Precision Time Protocol (PTP).

What this paper covers

  • How rooted timing and separately authorized participation fit together.
  • Why hardware capabilities and measurement references change the interpretation of precision.
  • Which scaling, power and wired-bridge questions need further work.

Research scope

The paper brings together evidence from separate implementations and experiments. It does not turn those results into a matched benchmark, qualify every topology or establish calibrated absolute UTC accuracy.

Read it in context

Read this before the protocol proposal if you want to understand the architecture and its tradeoffs. For a specific measured error, continue to the dated evidence and retain the experiment’s reference and coverage.
